The lingering scent of her husband, and the dominant pleasure that stands in opposition to it. Between these two, her eyes lose their light day by day, harboring a bottomless craving in its place. Once the forbidden door is opened, there is no road left to turn back.
The Erosion of the Sanctuary and the Redefinition of Pleasure
In this work, Waka Misono reconstructs the symbol of the “stable housewife” she has portrayed in previous projects, deliberately presenting it as something fragile and prone to collapse. Particularly noteworthy is the moment around the 41-minute and 30-second mark: the instant when, while sensing her husband’s potential return, she surrenders herself to the irresistible force of her superior, and reason simply vanishes from her expression. The heat her skin radiates goes beyond mere pleasure; it vividly captures the process of being “contaminated” by something else.
The “peace” she once sought to protect has now become a chain of “dissatisfaction” that binds her. What is truly remarkable is the “sense of emptiness” she displays during the act. Even as her body reacts intensely and she enjoys the pleasure of her transgression, her eyes seem to be gazing at something far away. This overwhelming dissociation is precisely what imparts a powerful sense of guilt upon the viewer, as if we are witnessing something we have no right to see.
In the dimly lit room, the scene where her silhouette melts into the shadows and her chest rises and falls with every breath gives the illusion of watching a quiet, personal tragedy unfold. The theme of having one’s “body rewritten” by another—something not seen in her past works—pushes the range of her performance into a new territory. While still possessing the guardian that is her husband, her sense of self slips away from her own grasp. The overwhelming sense of helplessness, forced to merely watch as she drowns, is what grants this film its ultimate immersive quality.
