The pressure of a forbidden relationship and the surging impulses. As skin touched before words could be exchanged and reason collapsed with a sound, only a sweet silence remained.

The Erosion of the Sanctuary and the Gradation of Uncontrollable Passion

In this work, the character of the “sister” she portrays vividly depicts an “explosion at the end of repression,” more so than any character she has shown in her previous works. Particularly noteworthy is the moment around the 32-minute and 10-second mark: the subtle nuance of that raspy breath and facial expression she reveals the instant she senses her partner while in a defenseless state of waking. This is not merely an expression of lust, but a clear record of the process by which the defensive wall of accumulated reason dissolves in an instant upon touching the heat source that is her partner’s body.

The highlight of this production is the serene movement of the “slow piston” during the act. In contrast to the active side shown in her past work, the gesture of “consuming time as if savoring every moment” gives the viewer a strong sense of impatience and euphoria. The sight of the lighting illuminating the contours of her skin, and her body—in the confined space of a closed room—drawing curves as it moves slowly up and down, resisting gravity, has reached an artistic level.

Especially striking is the process of her “sudden transformation” toward the latter half, where she lets go of her reason. The way the initial resignation of “wanting to get it over with quietly” is gradually rewritten into beast-like instinct is the story itself of a woman casting off her role and returning to her state as a human being. Her unfocused eyes and the gradation of her flushed skin, heightened by arousal, tell more eloquently than words the fact that “this relationship can never return to what it was.” Among her career-defining works, I find no other that has captured the dramatic medicine called “immorality” as beautifully and as earnestly on screen as this one.
