When the switch for pleasure—deviating from everyday life—is flipped, the map to return to her former world disappears from her eyes. Her form, dominated solely by the sensations of this very moment, radiates an attraction that is as painful as it is irresistible.

The Collapse of the Sanctuary and the Naked Ego

In this latest work, Iku Toba completely sheds the “innocent bewilderment” shown in her previous appearance, displaying a bold immersion that seems to lay bare the very abyss that existed within her. Particularly noteworthy is the moment around the 2-hour and 15-minute mark: the instant when, swallowed by multiple presences, her small body forgets even how to resist, instead surrendering itself to an intoxication known as “acceptance.” What is recorded there transcends the concept of acting, capturing a naked bodily reaction that feels akin to a form of “purification.”

What stands out in this production’s direction is the “temperature” of the space surrounding her. As the stage shifts from the claustrophobia of her family home to the extraordinary commotion of a love hotel, the process by which the weight known as “shame” is gradually lifted from her movements is recorded with extreme delicacy. The lines of her body, hidden in previous works, and the faint trembling between her eyebrows during moments of extreme tension are built up within this long-form narrative like a poetic epic.

Crucially, she is throwing herself into the depths of pleasure of her own volition. As if to bury the past of having been a “recluse,” there is no longer any hint of regret in those eyes, which greedily seek stimulation. The sight of the lighting highlighting her pale skin as her silhouette dissolves into the chaotic colors possesses a tragic beauty, like a young girl sinking into the sea known as adulthood. This footage transcends mere documentation; it can be called an intensely personal record, proving that her existence is “truly alive, right here, right now.”
